Duke Realty’s Chicago Office Kicks Off Wellness Initiative

WellnessChicagoOne out of every four deaths in the United States each year is from heart disease. The good news is that many of those deaths are preventable. So when we kicked off a new wellness initiative in our Chicago office in July, we did it with Life’s Simple 7, building on a program from the American Heart Association in conjunction with The Disque Foundation, a local nonprofit organization that works to advance healthcare education.

Presenting the Life’s Simple 7 plan, Registered Nurse Chris Peters used his 15 years of experience treating patients with cardiovascular disease to share information about assessing one’s health and preventing heart disease. Peters’ program included the following tips:

  • Controlling blood pressure is the single most significant factor in better heart health.
  • Being active lowers stress, reduces blood pressure, and fights obesity.
  • Keeping your cholesterol low helps prevent arterial plaque formation that can increase the risk of heart attack or stroke.
  • Eating better helps keep your weight at a healthy level and lower cholesterol and blood pressure.
  • Keeping your weight at a healthy level means fewer fat deposits, which means less risk of blood clots.
  • Smoking is the number one modifiable cause of death; quitting provides enormous health benefits.
  • High blood sugar encourages the growth of plaque, which means more risk of diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

This event was just one of many wellness programs in Duke Realty offices across the country and a good fit with the Heart Walk in September.
